Why Microsoft Desperately Needs to Hire Gary Vaynerchuk

There's been a perceptible shift in Microsoft's marketing lately.  Simply put, they've gone on the offensive.

Perhaps it's the natural response when you feel like you're getting picked on.  Apple's been successfully mocking them for a couple years now with the "I'm a Mac" ads.  The failure known as Vista has to be one of if not the most reviled pieces of software in the last 25 years.

Corporate Paranoia Is Costly

Update 12/29/2009
Some folks kindly pointed out to me that the tone of this blog post, written in June of 2009, comes across harshly and does not show the appropriate level of respect for our clients' procedures and protocol. I debated whether or not I should delete the post but decided to leave it as it is a record of an important moment in time for our company. It was a mistake to post this, and it is not something I would write today. I should have taken several deep breaths, done some pushups or something, and moved on.

Drupal Apache Solr Search: Multi Site (Instance) Setup

Ok.  So I ran into a little issue when I tried to run two Solr site searches at the same time.  Basically, all of the data for each site goes into the same index and when you search on one site, you get content from the other.

Not good.  And there is almost nothing out there to tell you how to deal with this issue, aside from posts on *.drupal.org telling you that the module itself isn't ready to deal with the issue.

Drupal Apache Solr Search: Single Site (Instance) Setup

Apache's Solr Search is an amazing faceted search that operates in a manner much like Endeca or Mercado...except that instead of costing over $60,000, Solr is FREE.  There's a really good walkthrough here.  Maybe better than this one.

Acquia Drupal: First Impressions

Acquia Drupal's been generating some decent buzz in the open source CMS community, especially because Dries Buytaert, the original creator of Drupal, is the CTO of the company. Instant cred.

My Journey To Entrepreneurship

I spent the first four years of my career sleepwalking, only waking to live on the weekends and then resume delta wave rest for the other five days. Eight years ago I woke up and accepted a fact that I had been trying to ignore:

Sleepwalking was not going to get me what I wanted.

I unclosed my eyes and started pursuing the phantoms of desire. I wanted to be able to work from the couch in my boxers, I wanted to be a millionaire, and I wanted to get there by creating and building a software company.

Five People I Wish I'd Met at Big Omaha

I met quite a few people last week at Big Omaha and I’ve already followed up with all of them and have set tentative hang out dates. I love making new friends. But as I track the slowly-subsiding buzz on Twitter I’m realizing that even though I met as many peeps as I could, I still missed out.

Here are five people I'm wishing I'd met (in no particular order):

Big Omaha

Just got back this morning from the Big Omaha conference and it was amazing, probably the best conference I've ever attended. The organizers only allowed 300 or so attendees to view a lineup stocked with some big names in the tech/entrepreneurship, including Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library fame, Jason Fried of 37Signals, and Jeffrey Kalmikoff of skinnyCorp.
